The 5th World Economic and Environmental Conference (the 5th WEC), co-organized by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), International Energy Conservation Environmental Protection Association (IEEPA), United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), supported by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF), International Solar Energy Society (ISES), Euro50 Group, United Nations Asia Pacific Centre for Agricultural Engineering and Machinery, European Wind Energy Association, University of Nottingham of UK, Canada China Business Council, foreign embassies, is scheduled to be held in Beijing from Nov. 16 to Nov. 18, 2012, the topic of the conference is Future Momentum towards Economic Prosperity: Green and Sustainable Development, and the sub-topic is Post Rio+20 Summit: Outlook.
The conference will continue to appraise and select the winners of the 2nd International Carbon-Value Award with the title of ¡°seeking best player of harmonious and sustainable development between economy and environment¡±, besides, by way of independent appraisal system, the conference will select and award potential green and low-carbon cities, confer them with ¡°China¡¯s Green and Low-Carbon Cities¡±.
Sustainable development of economy and environment needs whole communities raise awareness to participate in and to understand and learn practices and experience from other countries. The 5th WEC will further expand international communication and cooperation between China and others countries, especially developed countries and developing countries, so as to promote technological innovation and industry development of China in the field of energy conservation, environmental protection, new energy and so on. WEC advocates: leading green prospect in economy transition, promoting good and sustainable development in market economy, helping to boost China¡¯s green and low-carbon development by relying on international influence of WEC.
This conference will invite Abulaiti Abudurexiti, vice chairman of CPPCC, and Kandeh K Yumkella, UNIDO Director-General, to hold posts of Chairmen; the presidium members consist of high-profile officials from NPC, CPPCC, NGO, and ministers of China and abroad, ambassadors in China; Edward Clarence-Smith, Representative of UNIDO in China, and Jon Li, Secretary-General of IEEPA, serve as Secretary-General.

Mr. Abulaiti pointed out: climate change is one of the most severe challenges humanity faces in the 21st century. The establishment of WEC was derived from the "Green New Deal" proposed by the United Nations in 2008. It is an annual international summit with the focus on China''s economic and environmental fields, aims to promote China¡¯s sustainable development system and establish modal of win-win development in economic and environment, and has been successfully held in Beijing, Qingdao. The past four conferences attracted over 3,000 attendees from 40 countries, including high-profile officials from China and abroad, ambassadors, officials of UN and international organization. This conference is committed to building the link between China and World, emphasis on harmony development professionally and pragmatically in low-carbon and environmental protection, brand ¡°Vane¡± conference in the field of environmental protection. Abulaiti Abudurexiti, vice chairman of CPPCC, and Jiang Zhenghua, Cheng Siwei, Vice-Chairmen of the 9th and 10th Standing Committee of NPC, serve as chairmen of the 3rd WEC¡¯s presidium.

By way of questionnaire, social investigation, data verification and analysis, the Organizing Committee of the 1st WEC confirmed 96 participating enterprises from home and abroad, ranging from state-owned enterprises, foreign funded enterprises, large or medium sized enterprises and so on. The enterprises showed its achievements and contributions in the field of low carbon and environment from investment, production, R&D, product service and social responsibility and many other aspects. The 1st International Carbon-value Award¡ªReport on Low-Carbon Future Value has drawn widespread attention. The report indicated, all enterprises expressed recognition of highly strategic position of low carbon development, and 95% has formulated written low carbon development strategy, 98% considered low-carbon development strategy has very positive influence on improving enterprise value and use it in production, management and marketing. At the same time, report pointed that there were many problems in low-carbon development of enterprises was interesting, such as: the support policy of government uncertainly, market access standard disunity, inspection and supervision insufficient, financial support policies deficiency for small and medium enterprises in low-carbon development, state-owned enterprise¡¯s participation enthusiasm deficiently, and so on.
It is reported that the 5th WEC is scheduled to finish drafting White Paper of the 5th WEC 2012, Report on the 2nd International Carbon-Value Award, and Report on Development Potential of China¡¯s Green and Low-Carbon Cities.
